Spain (FIFA world rank 2, 13th appearance)
Spain, like Holland, is one of the best teams to never have won the world cup. Spain have always been considered underachievers until their Euro 2008 victory. Now Spain is considered the favorite to win this world cup. Qualification was a breeze for the Spaniards, easily finishing top of their group winning all 10 of their matches and boasting a +23 goal differential. Spain also had not lost a match in 30+ games until they lost to the US in the confederations cup last summer.
Spain has stars all over the field and many on the bench as well. They have the best strike partnership in the world with Fernando Torres and David Villa. These two play great together and know what to do in front of goal. The midfield is led by Xavi and Iniesta, the 2 best midfielders in the world. Also in the midfield is Xabi Alonso, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Busquets, and David Silva. That is 4 star players for only 2 spots. In defense, Spain have Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa, Joan Capdevila, and Raul Albiol. Again, more players that spots on the field. Even in goal there are 3 starters almost anywhere else with Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes, and Pepe Reina. This is a great team with great players and should be the favorite.
Switzerland (24, 9)
Switzerland qualified top of their group beating out Greece and Latvia in the weakest of the UEFA groups. However, they were impressive, losing only once in 10 matches. They are a good team but not deep. They have talent across the board but lack depth should injury or suspension occur.
Alexander Frei is the goal scorer for the Swiss and has done so at all levels. Johan Vonlanthen is another striker who is fast and technically gifted. Philippe Senderos will anchor a back line that hopes to deter all opponents with a suffocating defense.
Chile (18, 9)
Chile finished second in the South American qualifying table. They beat out Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. They are a strong attacking and aggressive team. Expect to see them attack in waves and tackle hard when they lose the ball.
Humberto Suazo was expected to led the team and score plenty of goals, but a recent injury looks to keep him out of the world cup. He is still undergoing treatment for a torn hamstring and is taking medication that could be deemed illegal which whould certainly disqualify him. However, Chile with still have Claudio Bravo in goal to lead as well as Fabian Orellana. Chile have many well known players who practice their trade in Europe.
Honduras (38, 2)
Honduras returns to the world cup after a 28 year absence. They finished third in the CONCACAF qualification group based on goal differential over Costa Rica. Honduras actually gave up the fewest goals in the group allowing only 11, however, that is still more than 1 a game as they played 10 matches.
Honduras have the likes of Wilson Palacios, Julio Cesar Leon, and Edgar Alvarez leading the team. Carlos Pavon was the leading goal scorer during qualifying, scoring 7 of their 17 goals.
Predictions:
This group is well set up for Spain to sweep through. I really see no reason why Spain will not win every match and convincingly. The only way Spain doesn't win is because they choke, but I just don't see it. Chile is the next best team in my opinion but after losing their leading scorer things could be tough for them. I don't see Honduras doing much but they could manage a draw or 2. I think it comes down to the Swiss-Chile match. Whoever, wins this match will finish second in the group.

Group E
Time for my group E analysis.
Holland (FIFA rank 4, 9th appearance)
The Dutch are the best team to never have won the world cup. They always boast a great team with great, skillful players. This WC the Dutch got seeded under some controversy. Before this WC FIFA used performance in the last 3 WC's to determine the seeded teams (teams at the top of the group) and the Dutch would have been unseeded if this was used this year (missed the 02 world cup). However, FIFA decided to use the world rankings and in turn the Dutch got the seed and a pretty decent draw.
Holland finished top of their qualifying group with a 100% record scoring 17 and only conceeding 2. Led by star players all over the field like Wesley Sneijder, Rafael Van der Vaart and Mark Van Bommel in midfield and Arjen Robben, Eljero Elia, Dirk Kuyt, and Robin Van Persie up top. This team is deep and talented and can compete with anyone in the world. However, can they live up to expectations?
Denmark (36, 4)
Denmark comes in as a strong European team that can definitely play. They qualified first in their group ahead of Portugal and Sweden. They scored 16 and allowed only 5 in 10 games. They are a team that when they make the WC they tend to make the second round. However, this could be a tough year for them.
The Danes will be led by experienced players such as Dennis Rommedahl, Soren Larsen, Christian Poulsen and Jon Dahl Tomasson. However, they also have infused some younger talent such as Nicklas Bendtner and Simon Kjaer into the team to even things out.
Cameroon (19, 6)
Cameroon is the most decorated African nation. After being the first African team to make the quarter finals in 90, Cameroon has always had a lot of pressure put on it. However, this is a team that can deal with the pressure and live up to expectations. They won their group will relative ease.
The Indomitable Lions will be led by Samuel Eto'o up front, Alex Song and Jean Makoun in the midfield and ageless veteran Riobert Song leading the defense. The only problem is that Eto'o has threatened to quit the team after a bust up with former team members. If he does not play Cameroon have little up front. If he does play, this team could go very far.
Japan (45, 4)
Japan have qualified for the last 4 world cups and have become a dominant power in Asia. However, except for their second round run in 02 (in which they hosted) Japan have never made it out of the first round. They qualified behind Australia in their group in which the top 2 teams moved on. They lost only once but won only 4 games and drew 3.
Japan will be led by Keisuke Honda and Marcus Tulio Tanaka. The team had trouble finding the net which could definitely lead to problems in South Africa. However, they are a strong and technically sound team that can give anyone trouble.
Predictions:
Holland and Cameroon are the 2 heavy weights in the group and are the favored teams as well. However, Denmark comes in with a lot of support and a strong team. Cameroon and Holland play each other in the last game which means that the group could already be decided by this point, however, I think it will be close. I honestly see the Netherlands winning all 3 games and cruising to the round of 16 with 9 points. I see Cameroon beating Japan in the first game and then drawing or beating the Danes in the next game. I think Japan will get a draw against Denmark so that they can leave the WC with something. I think Cameroon will finish second in the group while the Danes finish second and the Japanese finish last in the group.

Group D
Group D is a very intriguing group where anyone can come out of it. All of these games will be competitive.
Germany (Fifa Rank 6, World Cup Appearances 18th (3 times winner))
Germany is always a world power in soccer and always turns out greta players. They qualified top of their group will relative ease as they lost no games and won 8 while drawing 2. Germany is a defensive minded team as always but can still move forward in attack through the likes of Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez. They were not thought to be in their best form going into the 06 world cup and ended up finishing 3rd.
The problem is injuries for the German squad. Their top goal keeper, Rene Adler, and top player and captain, Michael Ballack, are both out for the world cup. They will be replaced but not with players that are as good. Losing two extremely influential players can hurt any team and it could put Germany on a plane home early.
Australia (20, 3)
Australia comes to their 3rd world cup and their first time in back to back cups. Australia joined the Asian qualifying group this time around after playing and dominating the Oceania group. However, Oceania has no guaranteed qualifiers so Australia left. They finished top of their group but only managed 7 goals in 6 games.
The Socceroos will be led by midfielder/attacker Tim Cahill. Cahill plays for Everton in the EPL and is a top class goal scorer. Australia look to build on their 06 cup in which they made it to the round of 16 where they lost to eventual champions, Italy, on a controversial penalty.
Serbia (16, 10)
Serbia plays in their first WC as Serbia (previously played as Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro). The Serbs qualified top of their group ahead of France. Serbia is a quality European team with lots of style and flair. They will be led by Milos Krasic, Nikola Zigic, and Nemanja Vidic.
Serbia will attack often and this group will allow them to do so. They have a solid back line but their keeper is the question mark. They can attack, posses, and attack but their keeper is not very strong.
Ghana (32, 2)
This is Ghana's second WC and they will look to build on their round of 16 performance in Germany. Ghana came out second in the "group of death" in 06 ahead of the US and Czech Republic. In qualifying they finished top of the group ahead of Mali and managed 4 wins 1 loss and 1 draw.
Ghana will be led by Michael Essien if he is healthy. He is a doubt at the moment but if he can play then Ghana can go far. Sulley Muntari is good goal scorer who will find space for himself with his pace. Ghana have a talented, young side but like most African nation's they lack experience at all positions.
Predictions:
Initially I thought Germany would top this group, but after the recent loss of some players I have to rethink things. Australia and Ghana look to build on their performances from the last World Cup and Serbia will be a tricky team for anyone. This should be a very tight group but I think Serbia finished top of the group with 5 points while Ghana will finished second with 5 points as well. Australia will end with 3 and Germany with 2 points. I just don't think Germany can score the necessary goals to move on.

Group C
We continue with our World Cup group by group analysis with group C today. Thats right, America's group.
England (FIFA rank 8, 13th appearance (1 time winner))
England breezed through qualifying, topping their group by 6 points of second place. Led by Wayne Rooney up front and the likes of Steven Gerard and Frank Lampard in the mid field, England made a statement. After failing to qualify for Euro 08 and sacking then coach Sven Goran Erricson, England has looked very dominant.
This is definitely one of the best English sides of all time but will that turn into a second World Cup trophy? After an injury scare that kept the entire nation holding their breath, Rooney has recovered and will lead the attack. Gerard and Lampard will control the midfield and try to spark the attack. John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole will anchor a very strong but very turbulent back line. Terry lost his captaincy after some controversy over an affair with another players with while Cole has had an injury plagued season and has been a little out of form. The questions come with the goal keeping and who will take up the position. Since David Seaman left after the 02 cup (and should have left earlier) the English goal has been weakly protected.
USA (14, 9)
The American's also qualified fairly easily (again) and topped CONCACAF. There was some turmoil about mid way through but the USA came out of it shinning and in first place. Team USA also put on a nice showing at the Confederations Cup losing to Brazil 3-2 after being up 2-0. The Americans actually went 2-0-3 in the tournament and got a lot of hype for a so-so performance. After being humiliated by Brazil and Italy in the group phase, they managed to finish second by beating Egypt and Brazil beating Italy. While the win over Spain and the game against Brazil in the final were impressive, the tournament as a whole was not.
The team will be led once again by attacking midfielder Landon Donovan. Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley will also help anchor the midfield while Jozy Altidore will be expected to lead the attack. Oguchi Onyewu will lead a strong back line and Tim Howard will patrol the goal posts. The American defense is strong but is their attack strong enough to get the goals necessary to move out of the group phase for only the third time in their history?
Algeria (31
Algeria is back in the world cup for the first time since 86. Algeria is probably the weakest of the African teams that went through qualification but that doesn't mean they can't play. They topped their group which included African Nation's champions Egypt and beating them again in a playoff. Lead by top goal scorers Antar Yahia and Karim Ziani the Algerians will play a counter attacking style to try to surprise teams. However, with little big game experience the Algerians could be over matched.
Slovenia (23, 3)
Slovenia enters the world cup after beating European big boys Russia in a two legged playoff match. They finished second to Slovakia in their qualifying group only 2 points back and with a goal differential of +14 (18 for to only 4 against). Slovenia then shocked Russia to earn their spot.
As you may have guessed, Slovenia boast a very strong defense. They also like to counter attack but can also hold possession and take control of a game as well. They will be led by top goal scorer Milivoje Novakovic and Mirnes Sisic.
Predictions:
This group is strange as 3 of the 4 teams prefer to counter attack and give up possession majority in order to do so. It will be interesting to see what happens when any of these teams play each other and who will take control of the game and be assertive. The USA vs. England match in game 1 should be fun and interesting to watch. In the end I think that England will probably top the group with 9 points but with the turmoil that has taken place in England they may falter. The USA will be favored to finish second but if they play like they did at the beginning of the Confed Cup they will go home early once again. Algeria are more happy just to be at the World Cup and will see making the knock out round as a bonus. Slovenia will try to impress again and make the knock out stages. I think the USA will finish with 4 points after beating Algeria and drawing with Slovenia, however, I think they finish second as Slovenia will finish with 2 points and Algeria with 1

World Cup group B
Group B is an interesting group with 4 quality teams but here is my analysis
Argentina (FIFA world rank 7, 15 world cup appearances (2 time winner))
Argentina is a strong team with lots of talent that hasn't seemed to live up to potential. With stars like Leo Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Diego Milito, and Javier Mascherano you would expect this team to be near the top in their qualification group and with a higher world ranking. However, Argentina struggled in qualification before finally finishing in the fourth and final automatic qualification spot.
Many blame this on coach and former great Diego Maradona. As a coach he has not reached the heights he did as a player. And he has not gotten the most out of Leo Messi like Barcelona has. In my opinion, the success of this team will come down to how well Leo Messi plays. If he plays in his current form for Barcelona, Argentina can win this whole thing.
Nigeria (20, 4)
Nigeria is another African team with a chance to go deep in the tournament. They have been the forefront, along with Cameroon, for African football for the past decade. Nigeria is currently the second highest ranked African team.
Nigeria left it late to qualify and wouldn't have qualified had Tunisia won their final game. However, Nigeria is a deep team with lots of attacking talent who can compete with the big boys. Most of Nigeria's squad plays in Europe including John Mikel Obi and Obafemi Martins.
South Korea (47, 8)
South Korea shocked the footballing world by finishing in fourth place in the 02 world cup. But they seemed to have fallen back to earth as they couldn't make it past the first round in 06. Korea struggled in qualification seeming to find late goals in all their matches to assure victory. They especially struggled against North Korea.
Park Ji-Sung, the Manchester United winger, will captain the side who is hoping to make it to the knock out stages for the second time ever. They will have a tough time in a strong group but are capable of pulling off upsets to get far in this tournament.
Greece (12, 2)
The Euro 2004 winners are appearing in the World Cup for the second time ever. Their first came at USA 94. Greece is a very defensive minded team that will only attack on the counter. Many were upset with their Euro 2004 win as they saw it as a step back for football to see a team play with 10 players behind the ball at all times. However, the strategy has proven affective and has risen Greece to number 12 in the world.
German born coach Otto Rehhagal has instilled a very disciplined team. Lead by star striker Theofanis Gekas Greece will look to counter attack against the other teams in this group. They will try to attack through the air and by playing suffocating defense.
My Prediction:
I see Greece struggling at this world cup. They have never scored in the world cup and I seem them having a hard time doing so again. Their defensive tactics will work for a while but each of these teams especially Argentina and Nigeria have the players to break open the defense and find the net. And if Greece is playing from behind they have no chance. South Korea has only made it past the first round once and that was when they hosted. I don't see them making it past the first round again this time. They will struggle against Argentina and Nigeria and I see them drawing their opening match with Greece.
In the end I see Nigeria following Argentina into the round of 16. The opening match of Nigeria-Argentina will probably be the best of the group in terms of exciting football. However, should Argentina struggle and Messi not play up to his standards at Barca, then they will find it tough to make the knock out round and could find themselves on an early plane ride home.

Nigeria left it late to qualify and wouldn't have qualified had Tunisia won their final game. However, Nigeria is a deep team with lots of attacking talent who can compete with the big boys. Most of Nigeria's squad plays in Europe including John Mikel Obi and Obafemi Martins.
South Korea (47, 8)
South Korea shocked the footballing world by finishing in fourth place in the 02 world cup. But they seemed to have fallen back to earth as they couldn't make it past the first round in 06. Korea struggled in qualification seeming to find late goals in all their matches to assure victory. They especially struggled against North Korea.
Park Ji-Sung, the Manchester United winger, will captain the side who is hoping to make it to the knock out stages for the second time ever. They will have a tough time in a strong group but are capable of pulling off upsets to get far in this tournament.
Greece (12, 2)
The Euro 2004 winners are appearing in the World Cup for the second time ever. Their first came at USA 94. Greece is a very defensive minded team that will only attack on the counter. Many were upset with their Euro 2004 win as they saw it as a step back for football to see a team play with 10 players behind the ball at all times. However, the strategy has proven affective and has risen Greece to number 12 in the world.
German born coach Otto Rehhagal has instilled a very disciplined team. Lead by star striker Theofanis Gekas Greece will look to counter attack against the other teams in this group. They will try to attack through the air and by playing suffocating defense.
My Prediction:
I see Greece struggling at this world cup. They have never scored in the world cup and I seem them having a hard time doing so again. Their defensive tactics will work for a while but each of these teams especially Argentina and Nigeria have the players to break open the defense and find the net. And if Greece is playing from behind they have no chance. South Korea has only made it past the first round once and that was when they hosted. I don't see them making it past the first round again this time. They will struggle against Argentina and Nigeria and I see them drawing their opening match with Greece.
In the end I see Nigeria following Argentina into the round of 16. The opening match of Nigeria-Argentina will probably be the best of the group in terms of exciting football. However, should Argentina struggle and Messi not play up to his standards at Barca, then they will find it tough to make the knock out round and could find themselves on an early plane ride home.

Transfer Season
With the news that Barcelona have agreed to terms with Valencia for David Villa, I think its time to talk transfers. Being a Barca fan I am gonna talk about the Barcelona summer transfers and spend some time on other rumors.
The big news is that yesterday Barcelona agreed to terms for David Villa, the Valencia striker. Barca spent last summer trying to wrangle Villa away unsuccessfully. It seems that this time Barca has found a way to bring him in. First off, I like David Villa and think he is a great goal scorer and is a good fit at Barcelona. However, he is 28 and turns 29 in December. He is getting older and his production wont continue to be as high as long. He will spend maybe 3 years in a Barca jersey before he loses his spot. I personally would prefer Barca to go after Fernando Torres of Liverpool as he has said he thinks continuing to play in the EPL will "ruin him". Barca could offer 35 million euros for him and I think Liverpool would sell. Torres is only 26 and could spend the next 5 years at Barca with great results. Also, I think Barca are giving up too much for Villa. The rumor is 40 million euros plus Alexander Hleb and Bojan Krkic. While I don't mind the fee, giving up 2 players both rated around 10 million euros is excessive. Especially when you are giving up Krkic. Krkic is only 19 and will turn 20 this summer. He is rumored to have scored 1000 goals while in the Barcelona youth system and he has also scored important goals for the senior team. He just missed a header against Inter and actually scored the goal that should have sent Barca to the final if it had not been incorrectly waved off. I think signing Torres and sending Bojan on loan for a year is the smarter move as you can then bring him back and let him develop a little more. Also, spending 60 million on Villa when Barca were only willing to spend 45-50 million on him last season is wrong.
The other problem this brings about is Zlatan Ibrahimavic. Does this spell the end for the Swede? I would say yes as he has failed to impress in his first season at Barca. Man City are reportedly interested in him and would be willing to spend 50 million for him. Or Barca could try to swap him for Torres. Either way this gives Barca some money to spend. Reportedly this money will be spend on Gael Clichy of Arsenal. He is a talented young (22) left back would would fit in well at Barcelona. It would allow Barca to sell off Maxwell who has also failed to impress, and move Abidal into center back, where he plays for France. With Puyol getting older, and possibly being sold as well, Abidal will fit in well in the middle with Pique. Abidal would spilt time with Milito, who has shown good form after coming back from injury. I wouldn't mind seeing Barca spend money on a center back as well but that doesn't seem likely. Hopefully Chigrinksy will improve next season.

South Africa 2010!!!!
It has been a while since I posted because I've been busy. I have decided it is time to take this blog in the direction of the World Cup. The biggest sporting event in the world (yes, statistically more people watch the world cup than any other event) takes place this summer in South Africa and once again 32 nations will compete for the chance to become World Cup champions. I have decided that I will do a group by group analysis with my predictions for each group and then after going through each group, give my predictions for the subsequent knock out rounds.
So lets start with group A:
France (FIFA rank 10, 13th appearance, 1 time winner (98))
France is the highest rated team in this group and most people seem to think that they will easily advance but I have to disagree. France did very poorly in qualification, finishing second to Serbia and forced to play in a playoff to make the world cup. And in that playoff against Ireland, Thierry Henry's handball has become famous. If not for that handball France might not have made it to South Africa.
Yes France made it to the final last world cup but they are not nearly as good as they were. This is not the same team with Zidane in the line up. Zidane had said he wouldn't play in the 2006 World Cup and wasn't playing qualifying either until France made an emergency call to him as they were doing poorly in qualification.
Henry and Benezema, their two best scorers, are in poor form and rarely finding playing time at the moment. Ribery has had an on and off year so no one knows how he will play. France do have a solid back line however which may save them.
Mexico (17, 15)
Mexico is another conundrum. They have qualified for the World Cup every year since 1950 but this time it was much harder. they barely made it to the final round of CONCACAF qualification, passing only on goal differential. Sven Goran Errikson was the coach and Mexico player terribly, starting of the final round very poorly and out of contention. However, Javier Aguirre came in and turned things around leading Mexico to 5 wins and 1 draw in their last 6 games and into second in the CONCACAF region.
This team was saved by a new coach and bring Blanco back into the squad. He helped create in the middle and this team is back on the rise. This team could very easily win this group and cause problems for other teams. Dos Santos and Torrado and midfield dynamos who can control and create. Carlos Vela is the man expected to score the goals
Uruguay (18, 11, 2 time winners (30, 50))
Uruguay finished 5th in their qualification group and had to play Costa Rica in a playoff to make the world cup final. CONEMBOL is one of the toughest qualification groups and South American teams always prove difficult opponents in the world cup. Uruguay finished qualifying on a high note by beating Argentina and then eliminating Costa Rica.
Diego Forlan, the former Man U player, is the big name in this side. He is a big time scoring threat against any of these teams and will cause problems for teams. He will be partnered by Luis Suarez, another goal scorer. These two together can reek havoc on their opponents, if they get enough supply of the ball from their midfield. The midfield is the big question for this team and will make or break them

However, no host has ever not made it to the knock out stages. There is something about playing for your home fans and in your home stadiums that cause these teams to over achieve (ie, France 98, Japan and South Korea 02).
Steven Pienaar is their best player and plays for Everton in England. He is a quality winger with good speed and touch on the ball. Gaxa is a solid left back who likes to get forward and will have his opportunities. Matt Booth is one of the most well known players and is very solid at center half. However, the question is where will the goals come from.
South Africa will try to build on its 4th place finish at the Confederations Cup last summer.
PREDICTIONS:
I honestly think France is going to crash out early this World Cup as they are lost without Zidane. The way the fixtures are set up lead me to think that Uruguay has a very good chance to finish top of the group with Mexico just behind them. I think Mexico are unlucky to have to play South Africa in the first game as South Africa will be hyped up and ready to go. The fans will be in full force and South Africa could win this though I see it ending as a tie. I see Mexico taking top spot with 5 points and winning on goal differential. Uruguay in second also on 5 points. France takes third on 3 points and South Africa finishes with 2 points.

Champion's League Semifinal Preview
This week marks the start of the Champion's League semi finals. 3 of 4 of the teams I predicted to be here have made it with the only exception being Manchester United (not complaining at all). On Wednesday, Bayern Munich play host to Lyon and on Tuesday Barcelona will play Inter Milan at the San Siro.
Barcelona have been forced to travel by bus to Italy due to the volcanic ash from Iceland. I don't really see this as being a problem and I know Barca will not use it as an excuse. That being said it does give Inter a slight advantage. That aside, Barca will be with out Iniesta through injury and Abidal has not been given the all clear to play though he is traveling with the team. I expect the Barca line up to be Valdes in goal; Maxwell, Puyol or Milito, Pique, and Alves on the back line; Xavi, Busquests, and either Toure for a more defensive approach or Kieta in the mid; and Messi, Ibra, and Pedro up top. Expect Barca to try to maintain possession and limit opportunities for Inter. Inter would love a 0-0 draw or a 1-0 win but Barca will push for that precious away goal and would not be upset with any scoring draw or a one goal loss (2-1, 3-2, etc). Obviously a win would be very welcomed but seems unlikely. Inter will play with Diego Milito up top (yes, brother to Gabi Milito of Barcelona) with Eto'o, Sniejder, and Pandev in an attacking mid role to try to counter. I think Barca will push the whole game like they always do and Inter will try to counter attack. I see this one very tight and would not be surprised with a low scoring draw or Inter win.
Lyon take on Bayern in the other semi. Bayern will probably be slight favorites in this tie though my prediction is for Lyon to get through. With Ribery and Robben on the wings, Bayern will be hard to stop but they also showed they can have give up a fair few goals themselves. This game should also be very tight and I expect Bayern to win but not by much. Lyon with the help of Hugo Lloris in goal will stay close. Lisandro Lopez has served his suspension and will be back ready to go. I think this one could end up 2-1 Bayern.

Weekend Thoughts
Well this weekend saw el Classico and my second favorite event, The Master's. In el Classico, Barca went to the Bernabeau and won 2-0 to give them the pole position for their second straight la Liga title. There are 7 games left and Barca has a 3 point lead and the tie breaker should they tie on points. Barca now need to match Madrid the rest of the way to retain their title and must also focus on Inter in a week in a half for their Champion's League campaign.
As for The Master's, it was exciting. I will start off saying that no matter what, I am still a Tiger Woods fan, as his golfing ability is utterly amazing. Say what you want about him as a person, he is still an amazing golfer. Also, I don't really like Phil Mickelson, and I have been trying to figure out why. He did go to ASU and me being a U of A grad might have something to do with it, it might also be that he is kind of the "anti-Tiger". Either way I don't really like when he wins but I must say he played great this weekend and deserved the Green Jacket. That shot on 13 through the trees was quite amazing. I was pulling for Tiger the whole time but he just had too many mistakes. Though given a 5 month layoff and him still finishing fourth is pretty damn amazing. And it is also scary to think that as bad as he played this weekend he still shot under par every round and was only 4 shots back. If he hit the driver a littler better and made a couple more putts he wins this tournament. What does that mean going forward? Who knows. I still think he has a great shot at the US Open at Pebble Beach and the British Open at St. Andrews but who knows.
Anyway, great weekend for sports. El Classico was a great game and even if you're a Real Madrid supporter you can take away positives from the game and know that you can still fight for the title. El Classico has also put Messi far above everyone else to retain his world player of the year all he needs to do now is do something in the World Cup and it is his. The Master's was as beautiful as ever. There is not a more beautiful or tranquil setting than Augusta National and there is no better golf tournament than The Master's. The set up to create opportunities, the course itself and all its subtleties, and of course the amazing players.

El Classico
El Classico is today. The game between Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two biggest sports teams (thats right, not just the two biggest teams in Spain or in soccer but in all of sport) in the world. The Bernabeau plays host tonight as Barcelona take on Real Madrid, with both teams equal on points and tied for first in la Liga.
There is not a bigger regular season game or rivalry in the world and these two teams wont disappoint. Madrid are looking to erase last year's game as Barca came to the Bernabeau and won 6-2. This game is even more important than last years and will be much closer. The game at the Nou Camp in November was won 1-0 by Barca so this game will not only give someone the lead but a clear path to the title. Right now the teams are separated by goal differential, with Madrid leading by 1 goal. After today, however, the teams will be separated by head to head should they be tied on points. A win by Madrid equals things and means it will go back to goal differential while a win or draw by Barca gives them the advantage.
The big talk is Messi vs. Ronaldo but that is not true. Yes these are the two best players in the world but they will not see much of each other. The game will be decided who finishes better as a team in my opinion. Each team will create chances but whoever take advantage of those chances will win. Real will be without Kaka which does hurt them but Barca will be without Ibrahimavic and Abidal which will hurt them. All in all it will be very balanced.
I expect Barca to control most of the possession like they do in every game and try to control the pace. I expect Real to come out fast to try to get an early goal and protect their back line (which is suseptible). Barca will try to let Xavi and Iniesta and Messi create while Madrid will let Ronaldo and Higuain create. Should be a very tight, very exciting game.

When is it bad to Win???
When you don't win by enough, thats the answer. Both Man U and Bordeaux won yesterday in the second leg of their quarterfinals ties but didn't do enough to advance. Bordeaux scored late in the first half through Chamakh but couldn't find the net again and won the game 1-0 but lost the tie 3-2 on aggregate which sees Lyon move on. Man U, down 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg, scored 2 early goals and then scored a third late in the first half and seemed to be cruising and in complete control. Up 4-2 on aggregate, Man U would have to allow 2 goals for Bayern to get back in the match. Well 2 minutes after Nani's second goal and Man U being up 3-0 and me thinking it was all over, Olic scored from a seemingly innocent play. However, United, thinking they had this in the bag, let down and Olic out muscled a defender and then beat Van der Sar to give the Germans hope. Early in the second half the Germans got another bit of hope and Rafael was sent off for his second yellow. Both fouls were definite cardable offenses and were both stupid fouls. Up a man, Bayern got more adventurous and pushed forward getting more pressure on the United goal. Finally in the 74th minute Ribery hit a floated corner perfectly to the back edge of the box where Arjen Robben was waiting. Robben hit the ball on the full volley into the lower corner and Van der Sar had no chance. Bayern held on and lost the game 3-2 but the aggregate was now 4-4 and due to the away goals rule Bayern move on and Man U lose out meaning there will be no English sides in the semis.

And finally, of course you test his ankle if you are a Bayern player and we all know your tactics and you would have done the exact same thing if the positions were reversed Fergie. The people to blame are yourself, for not having the right tactics and not make the right substitutions, and your players, for not holding onto a lead IN EITHER GAME. So mister Sir Alex Ferguson, step up and be a man and take the loss like a man and take the blame you deserve... oh and GO FUCK YOURSELF you hypocritical prick

Messi Master Class sees Barca meet Inter in the semi's
Leo Messi scored 3 goals in 21 minutes in the first half to end Arsenal's Champion's League dream this year. To be honest, Barca were poor in the first half and Arsenal rightly took the lead in the 18th minute. Barca seemed uninterested and lazy at first but Messi saved them. To be fair, Arsenal were unlucky on Messi's first two goals as the ball didn't bounce their way but the class with which Messi finished was second to none. The first bounced around the top of the box, landed on his left foot and then was rocketed into the back of the net. The second came a few minutes later as Messi played Abidal in on the left who then crossed, poorly, into the box. The ball was deflected then nudged back by Pedro to Messi who took one touch around a defender then finished cooly with his right. Arsenal continued to press and, though having less possession they looked the more controlled side. However, Vermaelen went for a header he shouldn't have as there was no cover behind him. The ball fell to Keita who headed Messi into space. Messi then performed his best finish as he cheekily chipped Almunia for his third and for a 3-1 Barcelona lead. The second half showed a more controlled Barca as they held the lead and kept Arsenal from having any real threat on goal. Then with 2 minutes left Xavi played Messi through again, and then he beat 2 defenders before having his first shot saved right back to him and then put it between Almunia's legs for his fourth. I would have preferred to see him play Keita through on this play but it is the strikers perogative to go to goal as he did. Barcelona will face Inter in the next round as Jose Mourinho's men won 1-0 in Moscow through a Wesley Sneijder goal (I believe Real Madrid are wishing they had not sold him).

Previewing the Second Leg of the Quarters
This week gives us the return legs of the quarter finals of this years Champion's League. We will see who the top 4 teams in Europe are this year and who will meet in the semi's.
Inter Milan @ CSKA Moscow... Inter held serve at home with a 1-0 winner through Diego Milito's second half goal. A 1-0 lead means this tie is very much in doubt, but it should be noted that Italian sides are famous for winning 1-0 at home and holding on to a nil-nil draw on the road to advance. These teams usually "park the bus" and have 10 men behind the ball at all times, but I do not see Inter or Jose Mourinho taking this tactic. I expect to see Inter play just like they did on the road against Chelsea and push forward in attack and defend strongly when needed. CSKA will be able to play at home in the second leg and many European teams have trouble traveling to Russia in the Champion's League. CSKA also didn't "park the bus" at the San Siro and looked dangerous at times in the attack. They had a few chances and could have scored that important away goal but just didn't manage it. With Necid, Honda, Krasic, and Mamaev in attack, this team can score goals. They also move the ball very well and pass and keep the ball well in very tight quarters. Their one touch passing can open up quick spacing for them and give them opportunities to score. In the end I see this game ending 1-1 with CSKA opening the scoring, Inter leveling early in the second half and then fighting furiously at the end to get the other goals necessary to move on but only getting 1.

Barcelona saw Pique and Puyol, their two first choice center backs, get suspended for this game which means Gabi Milito will pair along side either Rafa Marquez, most likely, or Dmytro Chigrynskiy. Eric Abidal is back healthy and may play but Andres Iniesta is still out thru injury and goal scorer, Zlatan Ibrahmiavic, will also miss out with a calf problem. Arsenal will be without captain Cesc Fabregas through suspension and injury while Gallas, Arshavin, and Song will all miss thru injury. Arsenal, who were already having problems in defense against Barca, will be without 2 center backs and will most likely have to start Sol Campbell who isn't preferred because of his age and speed. In the game, Arsenal must score at the Camp Nou and they must win. A draw of 3-3 or more will send Arsenal through as well. A 1-0 victory is what Arsenal will be playing for but that means they must keep Barca from scoring which does not seem likely. I expect Arsenal to look for a goal on the counter attack in the first half and if they don't get then they will start to push forward later. In the end I see Barca taking this game and this tie. and 2-1 victory or more seems likely as Barca looked great at the weekend while playing a lot of younger non-starters and Arsenal need a late goal to win over a 10 man side.
Bayern Munich @ Manchester United.. The big news in this game is that Wayne Rooney may not make a surprise return to the lineup, though I don't see that happening. With Wayne Rooney out, Man U lost at the weekend to Chelsea and may have lost the Premier league title as well. Man U lost 2-1 at Bayern which means they must score at least once and with Rooney out this could be difficult. Berbatov just hasn't seemed like scoring in any game I have seen but hopefully for Man U he can. Bayern will get Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinstiger back for the game which will make them even more potent in attack. I honestly think that Bayern will be able to get a 1-1 draw at Man U and move on to the semi's. The only real reason for this is because of Rooney being out and I see Man U having a hard time scoring.

Arsenal Grab 2 Late Goals to Square the Tie
Barcelona and Arsenal played to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the Champion's League Quarterfinal. Barcelona came out from the start pressing hard and nearly scoring within the first minute. Almunia had four great reaction saves to keep Barcelona out. Barcelona had 70% of the possession in the first half and should have been 3 up at half. However, the half ended nil-nil. William Gallas and Andrey Arshavin were both forced out in the second half thru injury and Gallas definitely looks like he had the more serious one and wont be playing in the second leg. The other big story was Cesc picking up a yellow for a silly challenge though it was a harsh yellow which will see him miss the next leg.
The second half start brilliantly for Barcelona with Xavi finding Zlatan Ibrahimavic in acres of space and Ibra cooly floating the ball over Almunia into the net. Almunia can definitely be blamed for this one as he started to come out then decided to stay in and was caught in between but it was a brilliant finish from the Swede. Barcelona continued to control and Xavi found Ibra in space again in a nearly identical play with Ibra finishing in the top netting for his double and a Barcelona 2-0 lead. The game and entire tie seemed over as Barcelona had the 2 away goals. However, Theo Walcott was introduced and had an immediate impact causing problems down the right and finally finishing to get Arsenal back in the game. Arsenal started to gain confidence and took control and leveled the game at two after Cesc was brought down in the box by Puyol. The cross came in from Walcott and was deflected to Bedtner who headed to Cesc who was then impeded by Puyol. Puyol received a straight red for this and will miss the return leg as well. Pique will also miss the next leg due to his yellow which also looked harsh. Cesc finished the penalty and looked to hurt his knee. He hobbled on the rest of the way but will be out for a while it looks like.
Personally I would have to say Barca deserved better but in the end didn't finish well enough to get the win. This tie could have been over 20 minutes into the game if not for Almunia. Arsenal took their chances well and finished them.
The return leg will be on Tuesday at the Camp Nou. I fully expect Barcelona to move on since Arsenal have to win or score at least 2 in the Nou Camp which is difficult to do. However, both Pique and Puyol will miss out and Iniesta looks to miss the next match as well. Cesc and Gallas will both be missing for Arsenal and Arshavin may miss as well. Seeing how much Barcelona dominated the game and controlled the game I expect more of the same.
I do want to say that I am disappointed in Messi. He looked uninterested most of the game and only had 2 good chances both in the first 20 minutes. After that he had touches but nothing that looked dangerous. I expect better from him in the second leg. I also have to say that Barcelona would have much preferred this game to end 2-0 for more reasons than advancing but also because they play Real Madrid on the 11th. Winning 2-0 at the Emirates would have allowed Barcelona to possibly rest some players before that clash.

Bayern and Lyon Grab Advantage
A couple really fun and exciting games to watch today. Lyon beat Bordeaux 3-1 and Bayern scored a injury time goal to beat the Red Devils 2-1. I applaud both away teams for trying to get forward and attack instead of playing like Chelsea and "parking the bus".
I saw the Lyon-Bordeaux game first and what a game it was. To the neutral observer this was a fun game to watch. An early goal from Lisandro Lopez gave Lyon the lead which was nullified 4 minutes later by Marouane Chamakh heading home. It looked like he might have pushed off on Cris to gain the advantage but there was no call and the match was square. Both teams, who have had strong defensive records coming into the game, gave up many opportunities. The goals were more due to poor defending than great attacking. The second Lyon goal came from Michel Bastos. A Bordeaux player missed a clearing header, Bastos took the ball, moved it to his left boot and then laced one into the corner. The attacking and chances continued for both teams. Chamakh had another chance with his head that he should have scored and Lyon could have put another couple in the net but failed to do so. The final goal came by way of a penalty. Lopez finished for his second of the game and gave Lyon the 3-1 advantage going into the second leg at Bordeaux. The tie is not over at all but Bordeaux must win by 2 at a minimum. I expect Bordeaux to come out attacking which could lead the space behind the mid and defense and to a Lyon goal which could really mess things up for Bordeaux. Lyon looks tough.

Man U also came out and attacked and made the game very open and fun to watch. Bayern controlled possession most of the game but couldn't score until Ribery scored off a deflected free kick. United didn't look great but still managed to get forward and create chances. Olic scored the final goal as he found Ferdinand and Vidic not paying attention and took it off them and then finished cooly to give Bayern the win. This gives Bayern the slight advantage in the tie and a nil-nil game in Manchester would give Bayern the tie. But holding United from scoring is hard to do. However, Rooney limped off at the end of the game with an ankle injury. There is no word on the extent of the injury but seeing as the game is in 8 days and how his ankle rolled I don't think he will be 100% fit. That being said, Rooney is tough and will try to get in the game if he can. Him not being fully fit though can cause problems as he seems to be the only United player who can score. The tie is very much still up in the air.
Tomorrow Barcelona travel to London to play Arsenal while CSKA Moscow travel to Milan to take on Inter Milan.

USA World Cup Squad
So I have been waiting a while to do this blog since Bob Bradley doesn't have to name his final team til mid May I believe. However, he is expected to name it sooner, probably toward the end of April. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in on who I think should be taken, the tactics and formation the team should use, and who should start.
I'll start with the formation since the type of formation the USA runs will determine who they will take and the number of players at each position (total of 23 players can be named). The formation I like is that of Inter Milan and Arsenal. Its a 4-5-1 hybrid. The two outside mids actually get into a high attacking position when in possession and will drop back when defending. I think this formation really suits the USA because we are deep in the midfield and lean up top, though it does look like Charlie Davies will make his return in time. A flat four at the back is what the US plays already and is no different. The five in mid would not be flat but would have 2 defensive/holding mids with the players out wide and one attacking/roaming mid. And then you would have one target man up top who would be given freedom to move around but would stay more in the center.
You always bring 3 keepers to the World Cup in case of injury. Obviously Tim Howard is the number 1 and will be in South Africa. Solidly behind him is Brad Guzan. He has established himself and a solid keeper and will be the number 1 one day (possibly in the next world cup). The third spot seems to be up for grabs though Troy Perkins seems to have the lead. Whoever it is will most likely not play but still they get to go!
With this new formation you would not need as many forwards and I would only bring 3: Jozy Altidore, Charlie Davies, and Brian Ching. Ching and Altidore fit into that single target man up top very well while Davies is more of a complimentary player but can also fit the role and in other places. I personally would start Altidore and I doubt many people would debate that. Bringing only 3 strikers is a risk especially if the injury bug hits and with the doubt that does still surround Davies but I think it would be more than enough since the US has a few mids who could play up top if necessary.
Speaking of midfield, I would being 9. The US midfield is fairly deep and there are going to be some disappointed people who will be staying home. The obvious bunch would be Michael Bradley, playing in one of the defensive/holding mid positions, Landon Donovan, who could play either on the wing, as the attacking/roaming mid, or even up top as a striker, and Clint Dempsey, who I actually hate but deserves to go and can play the same roles as Donovan. These 3 are for sure going. After that is gets a little more foggy. Personally I think Ricardo Clark (def/hold mid) and Stuart Holden (left wing) both deserve to go but both have been injured and it could cause problems. Still I think they both are in the side which makes 5 total. I think Maurice Edu has showed great improvement since his return from injury and is another def/hold mid who should be selected. DeMarcus Beasley showed against Holland that he can still play and is in consideration. Jose Torres, Freddy Adu (yes I know), Sacha Kljestan, Benny Feilhaber, and Aljendro Bedoya are all fighting for the last spots. I think DeMarcus Beasley makes the squad because what he can offer down the wing which would mean only 2 spots are left. I like Torres as a holding mid but he hasn't played well for the US lately. I prefer Feilhaber to Kljestan but its really a toss up there. I think it would be Feilhaber as he can offer help on the right wing and holding mid. The final spot for me is taken by Freddy Adu. Yes he has failed to live up to the hype so far but the reason I bring him is versatility. He can play on the wing, as attacking mid, and as a striker so he gets the nod for me.
The back line is a little more straight forward. Oguchi Onyewu, Steve Cherundolo, Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Spector, Jay DeMerit and Heath Pierce are all for sure. I would only bring 8 defenders so only 2 spots are left. As much as I dislike Jonathan Bornstein I think he will get one of the spots. I really liked the way Clarence Goodson played against the Dutch so I would bring him but I think Chad Marshall and Jimmy Conrad will also get some consideration.
My starting lineup would be Howard in goal, Onyewu, Cherundolo, Bocanegra, and Spector as the back four, Clark and Bradley as the holding mids with Dempsey on the right, Holden on the left and Donovan in the middle, and Altidore up top. If Davies is ready to go then I would put him in Donovan's position and move Donovan to the left wing.

I'll start with the formation since the type of formation the USA runs will determine who they will take and the number of players at each position (total of 23 players can be named). The formation I like is that of Inter Milan and Arsenal. Its a 4-5-1 hybrid. The two outside mids actually get into a high attacking position when in possession and will drop back when defending. I think this formation really suits the USA because we are deep in the midfield and lean up top, though it does look like Charlie Davies will make his return in time. A flat four at the back is what the US plays already and is no different. The five in mid would not be flat but would have 2 defensive/holding mids with the players out wide and one attacking/roaming mid. And then you would have one target man up top who would be given freedom to move around but would stay more in the center.
You always bring 3 keepers to the World Cup in case of injury. Obviously Tim Howard is the number 1 and will be in South Africa. Solidly behind him is Brad Guzan. He has established himself and a solid keeper and will be the number 1 one day (possibly in the next world cup). The third spot seems to be up for grabs though Troy Perkins seems to have the lead. Whoever it is will most likely not play but still they get to go!
With this new formation you would not need as many forwards and I would only bring 3: Jozy Altidore, Charlie Davies, and Brian Ching. Ching and Altidore fit into that single target man up top very well while Davies is more of a complimentary player but can also fit the role and in other places. I personally would start Altidore and I doubt many people would debate that. Bringing only 3 strikers is a risk especially if the injury bug hits and with the doubt that does still surround Davies but I think it would be more than enough since the US has a few mids who could play up top if necessary.
Speaking of midfield, I would being 9. The US midfield is fairly deep and there are going to be some disappointed people who will be staying home. The obvious bunch would be Michael Bradley, playing in one of the defensive/holding mid positions, Landon Donovan, who could play either on the wing, as the attacking/roaming mid, or even up top as a striker, and Clint Dempsey, who I actually hate but deserves to go and can play the same roles as Donovan. These 3 are for sure going. After that is gets a little more foggy. Personally I think Ricardo Clark (def/hold mid) and Stuart Holden (left wing) both deserve to go but both have been injured and it could cause problems. The greatness of Messi
Well it has come to the point that I just have to say something. Messi is absolutely amazing. In his past 3 games he has scored 8 goals (3 v. valencia, 2 v. Stuttgart, and 3 v. Real Zaragoza). And these goals are not just tape ins or lucky goals. Most of these are purely brilliant spectacles that only a few players in the world could replicate. I have added a couple of youtube links which show some of these goals. The first is the game against Valencia and it is a highlight tape of the entire game and in Spanish but Messi's brilliance starts at the 2 minute markwith some of his first half stuff and then moves to his second half brilliance but his best goal starts at 2:35. The first goal is a nice headed finish but the second is amazing. Takes the ball from a defender about midfield then beats one player and then races toward the goal before beating two more and clinically finishing. It is reminiscent of Maradona in '86 and Owen in '98
Is Leo Messi the best player in the world?? At the moment I would have to say yes (though I am admittedly biased) and the only person who is even close to him would be Wayne Rooney. But at the moment there is not a more influential player, for his club team, on the planet. Lets hope as Barca fans his form continues and that is does so in the World Cup as well

Champion's League Draw
Well the draw happened on friday and a soccer fan's dream has come true with Barcelona and Arsenal getting drawn together. This is the best and most interesting match up of the bunch with out a doubt. But first I'm gonna talk about the others.
Man U v. Bayern Munich... Interesting match up here. Obviously a rematch of the '99 Champion's League final which Man U won with 2 stoppage time goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Man U will definitely be the favored side in this tie but Bayern could cause a scare for the Red Devils. Man U will have the advantage of the second leg being at home but if they are not careful Bayern can score at home and put this matchup in doubt. With Robben and Ribery causing problems down the flanks, Bayern have a definite attacking scare. I still think Man U will win this tie (and eventually make it to the final) but I think Bayern win's at home but Man U gets the away goal and then finishes it off at home.
Lyon v. Bordeaux... The all French match up. These two teams obviously know each other very well being from the same league. In fact, they will play 3 games in quick succession as they play in the league right after the second leg of this tie. Bordeaux have the second leg at home and are currently in better form than Lyon, sitting atop the Ligue 1 table with Lyon in 5th (but only 5 points back). Lyon have the experience on their side as they have made the knock out stage in the past 6 years. I like Lyon in this matchup because of the experience and having defeated Real Madrid in the previous tie. Though this one is almost 50-50. The winner of this tie gets Man U in the next leg and will have the second leg at home. Man U will be favored against either of these teams and I think Bayern would be too. I see Man U moving on to the final.
Inter Milan v. CSKA Moscow... Inter had a great showing against Chelsea and get the "benefit" of the draw against the least well known side. However, playing against Eastern European teams and having to travel there is always difficult (just ask Barca: Rubin Kazan, Dynamo Kiev, and Shaktar Donetsk). Mourinho will have his team ready to go and will have the advantage of the second leg at home. I think the game in Moscow will be tight and tough but the game at the San Siro will be defining and send Inter through.

Barcelona will be favored in this match up as they are arguably the best team in the world at the moment (they would be favored against everyone they play right now though it would be almost 50-50 against Man U). Henry will be facing his old club and Cesc will be doing the same, though Cesc may also be facing his new club as Barcelona want to buy him this summer. Barcelona have the second game at home. This is also a rematch of the '06 final which Barca won 2-1 coming from behind late. I think the game at Arsenal will be high scoring and very exciting (3-2, 2-1, 3-3 type game). I think Barca will, however, once again take advantage at home and win the tie. The other interesting thing about this tie is that the weekend after the second leg Barca must go to the Bernabeu while Arsenal must take on Tottenham. These two games could cause the teams to play different but I don't see too much changing. The winner of this match gets Inter or CSKA in the next round and will have the second leg at home.
I picture it being Barcelona v. Inter and Man U v. Lyon in the semi's. Again I see Man U making the final and in the rematch of the group stage I think Barcelona will once again get by Inter in a very tight match up. This would obviously lead to a rematch of last years final which Barca won. Not sure who would be favored in this game at these are the top 2 teams in the world at the moment. Rooney and Messi are on amazing form and are scoring all the time. Barca's defense is weaker but their attack and possession is much stronger. I am biased so I will say Barca repeat but remember no team has repeated since it became known as the Champion's League. Also, the game will be in Spain which may help Barca and with it being at the home of your rival it could give Barca another advantage. Also, with Mourinho facing Barca it could be very interesting as he may take over for Real next season or Barca in 2 seasons (Guardiola unsure if he wants to continue after next season).

Barca run rampant
I was unable to watch the first game today, Bordeaux v. Olympiacos, but Bordeaux won the game and the tie and are into the quarters.
I did get to watch the Barcelona-Stuttgart game (of course) and what a beauty it was, for Barca fans. Unsurprisingly, Henry started the match with Messi and Pedro flanking him. The game started out just how Barca wanted, taking control and possession early and finding the net early. Another wonder strike from the best player in the world and Barca were off and running. Messi looked like he was out of space but somehow got the shot off and beat Leahmann. Barca got their second soon after with Messi the creator this time and Yaya Toure sliding it across for Pedro to tap home. Barca continued to push and came close a couple times in the first half but were unable to score again.
Stuttgart looked completely over matched and were unable to do anything to stop the Barca onslaught. Messi found the net again with another superb move. Pedro down the right slotted it back to Dani Alves who back heeled to Messi. Messi let the ball slide across him as he turned the defender and then wrong footed Leahmann. The only worry for Barca the entire game came when Sergio Busquets had to come off due to some sort of shin injury. However, when he comes off and you are able to bring Zlatan Ibrahimavic in, it is hard to say its a bad thing.
Ibra looked good and involved even if he didn't manage a goal of his own. It is positive to see him back in the lineup healthy and looking good. Ibra also finished the game with a brilliant thru ball between the legs of the defender to the on rushing Bojan Krkic who took one touch in the entire game and it ended up in the back of the net.
Fun game to watch for the casual observer or any Barca fan as they completely dominated and found the goals too. They join Bordeaux, Lyon, Bayern, Man U, Arsenal, CSKA Moscow, and Inter Milan in the final 8. The draw is Friday to see who plays who in the next rounds!
